Traffic Advisory in the Alamo District

Map of Alamo area construction September 2025

As construction continues in and around the Alamo, vehicle access is closed to ensure public safety and support the progress of ongoing work.

These restrictions are part of the broader effort to transform the Alamo District into a pedestrian-focused space, creating a safer and more welcoming environment for visitors in the years to come.

Alamo Promenade

Construction of Alamo Promenade

The Alamo Promenade, located just south of Plaza de Valero, will soon transform into a thoughtfully designed space featuring statues honoring key historical figures, shaded seating areas, and interpretive signage. This week crews are installing curbs, sub-slabs, and telecom equipment while also preparing soils and planting trees. Work includes pouring the Gateway Marker wall and running electrical and low-voltage lines. The overall project remains on track for November 2025 completion.

Plaza de Valero will soon feature a new flagpole, adding to the beauty of the grounds! This impressive addition will not only display large, vibrant flags year-round but will also transform into a Christmas tree during the holiday season.

The new flagpole installation, originally scheduled for late August, has been rescheduled to Oct. 1st. Once complete, the flagpole will display large flags year-round and transform into a Christmas tree during the holidays.

Visitor Center and Museum (VCM), scheduled to open in the Fall of 2027, is progressing. At the Crockett Building, crews are reinforcing and pouring new foundation walls; at the Old Palace Theater, underground plumbing is underway; and at the Woolworth, pier caps, grade beams, and underground utilities are being installed.

The Texas Cavaliers Education Center progress continues, with aluminum frames and glazing underway on the second floor, stone veneer on exterior walls, terrazzo flooring prep on level one, and sheetrock and ceiling framing throughout. Temporary air conditioning has started to condition the space as interior finishes advance. The project remains on schedule for February 2026.

Cenotaph - Restoration

The restoration of the Alamo Cenotaph is well underway. Restoration remains active with stone patching and reinstallation continuing, alongside excavation work in the areaway. The Cenotaph project remains on track for completion in fall 2025. Updates on the Cenotaph’s progress, as we preserve this monument in its historic location, will continue in our regular construction notices.

Paseo del Alamo

Construction area of Paseo del Alamo

The Paseo del Alamo project work continues with retaining walls being poured near Ripley’s and the Hyatt, backfilling around the large cistern, waterproofing elevator walls, and pouring grade beams for the future water feature.

The Paseo is on track for completion in April 2026.

Houston North Streetscape - Important Announcement

Federal building on Houston Street

Pedestrian access along the north sidewalk will remain open during construction of the Visitor Center and Museum, scheduled for completion in 2027. Fencing within the roadway will stay in place to support safe progress.

To help visitors and nearby businesses, wayfinding signage and updated pedestrian maps have been created.

Looking ahead, Houston Street—from North Alamo to Avenue E in front of the Garcia Federal Building—is expected to close by late 2025. Temporary closures will begin September 22 for archaeology and potholing. While the full closure date is not yet set, we’ll continue providing timely updates and advance notice to minimize disruption.
