Fandangos were community dance parties historically held in public squares and large homes to celebrate special occasions. Legend has it that on February 22, 1836, the Alamo Garrison held a Fandango in honor of George Washington’s birthday. The next day, the Mexican Army, led by General Santa Anna arrived in San Antonio and began a siege on the Alamo which culminated in the final battle on March 6, 1836
