Alamo Archaeology Church Preservation - October 24

October 24, 2025

Archaeological investigations continued in three excavation units at the Alamo Church.

Excavations continued at EU-139 this week and archaeologists reached an approximate depth of 50 cm below surface. The top of the previously encountered limestone alignment was starting to appear in the northern portion of the unit.

Excavations continued in EU-15. Archaeologists reached a depth of 80 cm below surface by the end of the week. A compact caliche surface was encountered and documented at approximately 60 cm below surface. A large utility extends across the northern portion of the unit and there are additional cut trenches visible in the profile that indicate old utilities were present in the area. The artifacts recovered from this unit include a large quantity of construction related materials, such as nails, as well as glass and other artifacts.

Archaeologists began excavations at EU-20 on the north side of the Alamo Church. Excavations reached an approximate depth of 30 cm below surface. So far very few artifacts have been recovered. The top levels of this unit are modern landscaping deposits.
