Alamo Archaeology Church Preservation - November 7

November 7, 2025

Archaeological investigations continued for the Church Preservation Project. Archaeologists worked in EUs 23, 24, 27, 131, and 138.

A group of three excavation units on the north side of the Church was active last week. EUs 23, 24, and 27 are adjacent units and have similar depositional history. The main difference between the units is the presence of different utility trenches within the units. All three units contained a portion of the limestone feature encountered the previous week in EU-20. This limestone feature extends north from the Church wall and then appears to form a corner. It is also possible that there was a surface associated with the feature, but more investigation is needed. The feature is shallow, approximately 40 cm below surface.

Archaeologists opened a new unit, EU-131, against the south side of the Alamo Church.

Archaeologists reached an approximate depth of 50 cm below surface. There were few artifacts but the original foundation stones for the Church are beginning to be revealed.

Excavations are EU-138 reached an approximate depth of 90 cm below surface. Archaeologists were able to reveal the north façade of the limestone alignment previously encountered in EU-139 to the south of this unit. Additionally, archaeologists encountered two surfacing episodes, which were likely part of an interior floor.
