Investigations continued for the Church Preservation Project. Archaeologists began EUs 4 and 5, located between the Church exit and gift shop entrance. The modern sidewalk was removed prior to excavations. Both units have evidence of modern disturbance and were previously excavated for utility work.
In EU-4, archaeologists excavated to approximately 50 cm below surface. The upper levels of EU-4 have consisted of modern disturbance, including construction fill and an abandoned irrigation line. Several excavation obstacles arose for archaeologists when thick roots and a dense modern caliche base were encountered. The roots remained in place, while the modern base was documented and eventually removed. A partial gun flint was recovered at approximately 50 cm below surface; however, no other significant cultural material or archaeological features were documented.
Archaeologists in EU-5 excavated to an approximate depth of 60 cm below surface. Like EU-4, EU-5 consisted of modern disturbances, including deposits of construction fill and a utility running northeast to southwest. Archaeologists did not record any archaeological features or recover any diagnostic artifacts.
