Alamo Archaeology Church Preservation - May 23

May 23, 2025

Investigations continued for the Church Preservation Project. EUs 4 and 5 have completed final documentation and are in the process of being backfilled. Archaeologists resumed work in EU1 and EU12 and have opened EU1 Extension.

EU1 Extension, a 50 cm by 1 m unit, is located on the northeast corner of EU1. The purpose of the unit extension is to locate and document the top of the limestone foundation associated with the Hugo & Schmeltzer store that was originally encountered within EU1. In a short time, archaeologists were able to locate the top of the foundation in the extension at approximately 34 cm below surface. As of now, archaeologists are in the process of thoroughly documenting the feature in the extension and removing the previously documented limestone foundation within EU1. Documentation entails hand drawn to scale maps, soil profiles, and a detailed description of the feature itself. During excavation within EU1 Extension, no other archaeological features were identified. Cultural material included nails, brick fragments, and debitage.

EU12, located on the south side of the Alamo Church, has resumed excavations. Archaeologists were able to complete two excavation levels until they hit the culturally sterile R horizon at 130 cm below surface. In the remaining levels, archaeologists did not encounter any diagnostic cultural materials or features. Archaeologists are now in the process of completing plan maps, soil profiles, and end of unit documentation.
