Alamo Archaeology Church Preservation - June 6

June 6, 2025

Archaeologists resumed investigations at the Alamo Church this week, working in EUs 6 and 10.

EU-6 is located northwest of the Church exit door. This unit reached an approximate depth of 60 cm below surface by the end of the week. Excavations were hampered by very hard silty clay at the surface and then multiple old utility conduits throughout the unit. While artifact counts were generally low, archaeologists did recover a sizeable piece of mortar with adhered plaster.

In EU-10, archaeologists encountered a concrete sub-slab and old curb approximately 20 cm below surface. The unit was paused while the support team, Pugh Constructors, removed the concrete. Once the concrete was removed, excavation resumed. Archaeologists reached an approximate depth of 60 cm below surface by the end of the week. The soil deposits, thus far, correspond with the deposits seen in all of the units south of the Church. Like EU-6, few artifacts were recovered.
