Alamo Archaeology Church Preservation - January 26

January 26, 2026

Archaeologists continued investigations for the Church Preservation Project in EUs 45, 62, 119, and 129.

Archaeologists began a new unit- EU-45- in the group south of the Gift Shop. This unit was started late in the week and was excavated to a depth of approximately 30 cm below surface. The top level was similar to adjacent units and exhibited signs of previous impacts.

Archaeologists also began excavations at EU-62 against the north transept Church wall. Archaeologists excavated to a depth of approximately 50 cm below surface. There were two utility pipes in these upper levels, indicating more modern activity. This unit had artifacts such as glass bottle fragments and metal fragments.

Late last week archaeologists opened EU-119. This unit is located at the south transept of the Church. A depth of approximately 30 cm below surface was reached by the end of the week. The entire deposit represented a modern clay loam installed as part of the landscaping around the Church. No historic artifacts were recovered, but archaeologists did find a 1991 US quarter.

EU-129, located at the southwest corner of the south transept was also excavated by archaeologists. Archaeologists excavated to a depth of approximately 100 cm below surface by the end of the week. The previously encountered police substation wall foundation was exposed in this unit. The feature is in fair to good condition and after documentation will continue to be preserved in place.
