Alamo Archaeology Church Preservation - August 1

August 1, 2025

Archaeological investigations continued at the Alamo Church last week. Excavations began in EUs 30, 33, and 37 excavation continued in EU-35.

EU-30 is located on the north side of the Church and is within a block of four units that includes EUs 30-33. In EU-30, archaeologists reached a depth of 60 cm below surface by the end of the week. Archaeologists noted multiple intrusive soil deposits, including a circular deposit of clay loam that was almost devoid of artifacts. Throughout unit artifact counts remained low, however nails and other construction materials were present.

Archaeologists in EU-33 also reached an approximate depth of 60 cm below surface by the end of the week. This unit had evidence of later intrusions, likely from the general store that was a part of the Alamo site in the late 1800s. While the deposits were mostly later in date, archaeologists did recover some interesting artifacts. A small shell button was found adhered to a stone that was removed. There was also a decorated earthenware fragment.

Archaeologists in EU-35 reached a depth of approximately 60 cm below surface. Archaeologists also documented two features. One is the known feature from previous excavations and the second is tentatively identified as possible wall fall. Few artifacts were encountered during excavation.

A fourth unit—EU-37—also reached an approximate depth of 60 cm below surface. This unit is on the opposite side of the garden wall from EU-33 and the two units share many similarities. Both units have a small square-shaped foundation likely from a post or something similar. EU-37 also has later soil deposits with some interesting artifacts such as historic bottles and lead glazed ceramics.
