William Irvine Lewis, Alamo defender, son of Dr. Charles W. and Mary Bullen (Irvine) Lewis, was born in Virginia on June 24, 1806. He was later a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had been visiting a friend in North Carolina when he decided to travel to Texas. His journey led him to San Antonio de Béxar and the Alamo. He died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Sometime after his death, Lewis's mother wrote to Texas requesting some memento of her son and was sent a small monument carved from a stone from the Alamo ruins.
