William H. Smith, Alamo defender and resident of Nacogdoches, was born in 1811. He served in the revolutionary army for six months before the siege of the Alamo. He took part in the siege of Bexar and served in the Alamo garrison as a member of Capt. William R. Carey's artillery company. Smith died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
