William E. Summers, Alamo defender, was born in South Carolina in 1812 and moved to Gonzales, Texas, where he was mustered into the Gonzales Ranging Company of Mounted Volunteers on February 23, 1836. He rode to relieve the Alamo with this group and arrived on March 1. He died five days later in the battle of the Alamo.
