Sutherland, William DePriest
William DePriest Sutherland, Alamo defender, son of Frances (Menefee) and George Sutherland, was born on August 10, 1818. He was the nephew of Alamo courier Dr. John Sutherland, Jr. He apparently lived with his uncle in Tuscumbia, Alabama, as a medical student in LaGrange College after his parents left for Texas in 1830. Sutherland was in Texas by 1835. On July 17, 1835, he attended a meeting at the Navidad and Lavaca rivers, calling for a consultation of Texas committees. Sutherland joined the Texan garrison at San Antonio de Béxar on January 18, 1836, where he probably arrived with his uncle in the company of Capt. William H. Patton. He died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
