Joseph Rutherford, Alamo defender, son of Julius and Rhoda Rutherford, was born in Kentucky in 1798. He lived in Texas as a married man with a small daughter, who was raised after the Texas Revolution by Joseph Durst. Rutherford took part in the siege of Bexar and later served in the Alamo garrison as a member of Capt. William R. Carey's artillery company. He died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
