Little is known about the life of José María Guerrero. He may have been a resident of Laredo, Texas. In the 1870s, Juan Seguin submitted a list of nine Tejanos who were under his command and comprised ten of the twenty-five men who entered Bexar with William Barret Travis, February 3, 1836. Seven of the ten who went to the Alamo died there. Seguin and two of his men, Antonio Cruz y Arocha and Alexandro de la Garza, were sent out as messengers. Guerrero was listed by Seguin among the fallen.
