John Davis, Alamo defender, was born in Kentucky in 1811. He left his twin brother in Kentucky in his late teens and immigrated to Texas. On October 28, 1831, he received title to a quarter league of land on Lavaca Creek in DeWitt's colony, where he gained a reputation as an Indian fighter. On February 23, 1836, Davis was mustered into the Gonzales Ranging Company of Mounted Volunteers. With this unit he arrived at the Alamo on March 1, 1836. He died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
