John, a freedman or former slave, was said to have been employed as a clerk in a store owned by Francis L. Desauque. John remained in the Alamo when Desauque was sent out for supplies. Although both Desauque and John were initially listed as fallen Alamo defenders, Desauque traveled to Goliad where he was killed March 27, 1836 during the massacre. John died in the battle of the Alamo March 6, 1836.
