Charles S. Smith, Alamo defender, son of Charles Somerset and Ann (Southern) Smith, was born in Maryland in 1806. He moved to Texas from Louisiana, enlisted in the service of Texas on October 10, 1835, and took part in the siege of Bexar as a member of Capt. Thomas F. L. Parrott's artillery company. He volunteered on December 14, 1835, to serve an additional four months and remained in Bexar as a member of Capt. William R. Carey's artillery company. Smith died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Col. James C. Neill later stated of Smith that he "served faithfully and fell in the Alamo."
