On this historic day—the 189th anniversary of the firing of the Alamo’s legendary 18-pounder cannon—the Remember the Alamo Foundation is proud to announce a generous $2.5 million donation from The Nelson Puett Foundation. This contribution will fund the creation of the new and improved Alamo Southwest Corner, a key initiative of the ongoing Alamo Plan designed to enhance public understanding of the site’s nearly 4.5-acre footprint.
The new interpretation will mark where the southwest corner of the Alamo once stood, providing visitors with a clearer visualization of the mission’s original scale and the towering height of its defensive walls. The expected completion date is early 2026. This enhancement ensures greater historical understanding for the 1.6 million visitors who come to Texas’s top tourist destination each year.
"We are proud to support this important project that enhances the understanding of the Alamo’s history. Preserving and sharing this site’s story ensures that future generations can appreciate its significance and the lasting impact it has had on Texas and beyond," said Nelson Puett of The Nelson Puett Foundation.
The significance of this moment in Texas history cannot be overstated. On February 23, 1836, the opening day of the Siege of the Alamo, Colonel William B. Travis ordered the firing of the 18-pounder cannon from the southwest corner of the fortress, sending a resounding message of defiance to General Santa Anna and his forces.
This exhibit will also highlight the home of Alamo Defender José Toribio Losoya, who was born at the Alamo in 1808 and fought to the end during the battle in 1836. Near the original location of the Losoya house, the interpretation will give visitors an authentic glimpse into both his life and the broader history of the Alamo Defenders.
Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of Alamo Trust, Inc., expressed her gratitude, “We are profoundly grateful to The Puett Family and The Nelson Puett Foundation for this generous gift. Their contribution allows us to bring the Alamo Southwest Corner to life, deepening our understanding of the Alamo’s full scale and providing visitors with a tangible connection to the heroic stand of 189 Defenders.”
