Dignitaries standing in front of a red ribbon to celebrate opening of Alamo Promenade

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Alamo Trust Inc. President and CEO Hope Andrade officially cut the ribbon Friday on the Alamo Promenade, a welcoming gateway to the Alamo grounds that features statues honoring key historical figures and shaded seating areas.

The Promenade will create a sense of arrival from Commerce Street onto the historic site by converting a traditional street into a pedestrian-friendly walkway. The statues will lead toward the nearby Briscoe Western Art Museum, creating a powerful connection between two cultural destinations.

"Step by step, building by building, we are preserving, restoring, and enhancing these hallowed grounds of the Alamo," Andrade said. "That's why we developed the $550 million Alamo Plan - to transform, elevate, and deepen the visitor experience."

The Promenade features statues of true legends like Army General and future Texas President Sam Houston, Texas Declaration of Independence signer José Antonio Navarro, and Alamo couriers Juan Seguin and John W. Smith.

"The Alamo was the first place I visited when I came to Texas in 1979," said Lt. Governor Patrick. "The Alamo means so much to me, as it does to millions of Texans, Americans, and people worldwide. Today’s ribbon cutting for the Alamo Promenade is yet another vital step in making sure the Alamo is one of the finest historic sites in the world. As Lt. Governor, I will never stop fighting to preserve and protect the Alamo, and the principles of freedom, liberty, and patriotism that its defenders laid down their lives to uphold in 1836."

The event, called "Happy Trails," also served as the culmination of the Alamo Statewide Stampede, a friendly competition among Texas counties this year to raise money for the Alamo. The Stampede raised a grand total of more than $2.8 million for the Alamo Plan. The Alamo's home of Bexar County raised the most money, and the county that raised the most per capita is Kenedy County along the South Texas Gulf Coast, with just 350 residents!
