Today, The Alamo officially launched the Statewide Stampede, a historic initiative calling on all 254 Texas counties to rally together in support of preserving Texas’ most iconic landmark. The event, held at the newly reopened Plaza de Valero, was marked by the reading of Lieutenant Colonel William Barret Travis’ legendary “Victory or Death” letter, commemorating the 189th anniversary of Travis’ call for reinforcements during the Battle of the Alamo.
“Around the globe, the Alamo stands as a symbol of bravery and utmost sacrifice. Preserving and protecting the Shrine of Texas Liberty for future generations is something we take seriously,” said Dr. Dawn Buckingham, Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office. “With the support of the Legislature, we have been able to advance critical conservation efforts and improve the visitor experience, ensuring a visit to the Alamo is worthy of the significance of the events that took place there.”
The highlight of the event was an official challenge issued by Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of Alamo Trust, Inc., calling on all Texas counties to take part in this historic initiative. The challenge encourages local communities to compete in raising the most funds per capita to support the Alamo’s preservation and enhance the visitor experience.
The Statewide Stampede Capital Campaign is a major component of the ongoing $550 million Alamo Plan, which is dedicated to:
- Restoring the battlefield footprint
- Enhancing the visitor experience
- Preserving and sharing the full 300-year history of the Alamo
“The Alamo is once again calling upon the people of Texas to come to its aid, just as Travis did nearly two centuries ago,” said Dr. Kate Rogers, Executive Director of Alamo Trust, Inc. “Through this campaign and the county challenge, every Texan has the opportunity to be part of history.”
Texans Can Participate By:
- Sponsoring the upcoming Saddle Up! fundraiser on March 29
- Making a direct donation at any level
- Donating proceeds from livestock sales
To track participation, the Texas County Leaderboard, which ranks donations per capita, has been launched and will be updated regularly via social media. This ensures that every county, large or small, has an equal opportunity to lead the charge in preserving Texas history.
The event concluded with a powerful ceremonial branding, where Commissioner Buckingham, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, and members of the Alamo Trust, Inc. and Remember the Alamo Foundation boards branded a Texas-shaped piece of leather with the official Statewide Stampede brand. The brand, which incorporates the Mission Valero insignia and the Alamo parapet, symbolizes the connection between the past and the future. Following the branding, Alamo Living Historians fired a musket salute, officially kicking off the campaign.
