James Tylee, Alamo defender, was born in New York in 1795. He was a farmer, and in December 1834 he and his twenty-four-year-old wife, Matilda, applied for land in Texas. Tylee later became estranged from Matilda; on December 12, 1835, he ran a notice in the Telegraph and Texas Register stating that he would not pay any debts contracted by her on his account. Tylee served in the Alamo garrison and died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
