Shannon Stiles began working as Curator at the Alamo Trust in November 2019. She served as the Curator for the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs Museum Program in Washington, D.C. from 2016 to 2019. Prior to that, Shannon worked in museums and other educational institutions in Oklahoma, Massachusetts, and New York. She received a bachelor’s degree in History from Harvard University and a master’s degree in Museum Studies from New York University. She is a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. From 2012 to 2014, Shannon was a board member of the Mountain-Plains Museums Association (MPMA) and founded the MPMA Native American Connection (now Indigenous Peoples and Museums Network) for Native American museum professionals and museums in the region. Shannon was born in Harlingen, Texas, and grew up in Waco, Texas. As a Texan, born and raised, she is honored to bring her knowledge and experience back to her home state.
Curator, U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Museum Program, 2016-2019, Reston, Virginia: Shannon cared for a collection of nearly eight million objects housed in locations across the country, including in the Department of the Interior headquarters in Washington, DC, BIA regional and local offices, and Bureau of Indian Education schools.
Development and Marketing Associate, Noel Pointer Foundation, 2015-2016, New York, New York: Shannon applied for and managed hundreds of thousands of dollars of Federal, state, city, and private foundation grants for a string instrument music school for children in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Managed the organization’s website, social media, and marketing.
Intern, International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, 2014, New York, New York: Shannon created dialogue programs for Native American sites to use to discuss contemporary issues with visitors. Set up an International Indigenous Peoples Network for the Coalition.
