The Alamo Needs You!

Are you interested in Texas history? Do you enjoy sharing your knowledge with others? The Alamo is currently looking for volunteers. Alamo Docents

The primary purpose for Docent program at the Alamo is to provide a meaningful educational experience for the visitor through personal interaction. For this reason we ask that all volunteers devote their attention to our visitors while at the Alamo. Keep in mind that while here docents represent the Alamo. Also remember that the public associates the behavior of all volunteers with the Alamo and its interpretation. As such, each volunteer's behavior is a reflection on the Alamo.


Basic Expectation of Job Performance


As an Alamo Docent and a volunteer at the Alamo Complex, you are expected to . . .
. . . be at your designated post.
. . . be accessible to visitors.
. . . provide security oversight in your assigned area.
. . . be well groomed and conform to the specified clothing requirement.
. . . be knowledgeable; continually demonstrate growth.
. . . be punctual.
. . . refer questions or inquiries to proper sources.
. . . respond to visitors needs; exceed visitor expectations when possible.
. . . display respect for the DRT, the Alamo staff, and fellow volunteers.
. . . maintain confidentiality regarding the operation of the site.
. . . follow proper procedure for grievances.
. . . refuse any monetary gratuity [tips] from visitors.

Being an Alamo Docent requires . . .
. . . the ability to communicate information to the public.
. . . the ability to assist the public with problems they may experience.
. . . an even tempered disposition and the ability to remain pleasant under stress.
. . . standing for long periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for becoming an Alamo docent are . . .
. . . you must be at least 18 years old.
. . . you must have at least a high school diploma.
. . . you must be willing to work with the public.
. . . you must have your own transportation to and from the Alamo.
. . . you must have an interest in the Alamo and Texas history.
. . . you must be willing to submit to a background check.

The Selection Process
The Alamo periodically issues public call for individuals who would like to volunteer their service as docents. These individuals are invited to an orientation meeting as the Alamo where they will learn more about the docent program. If accepted into the program, volunteers will receive training materials to help them prepare for their role in the Alamo’s interpretative program.
